Prada S/S 2011 RTW Woman’s COLLECTION
Blinding neon lights, the sound of drums and an icy cold silver-grey runway with firm
concrete pillars suddenly comes to life in bold primary colours! It is bananas,
naïve monkeys, stripes and all things nice this season for Prada; uniforms are
transformed to a ready-to-wear range that is raw glam and befitting to the high
class standards of Prada. The collection started where the menswear show had
ended. The first designs (figures A1, A2, A3) in acid orange, electric blue and
dark green cotton were indeed directly inspired by the hospital scrubs seen on
the menswear runway in June this year and so were the hazard-free striped
platform shoes with coloured rubber and natural rope soles, though, for the
women’s wardrobe, they had been revamped with a higher heel and a little more
colour for the strut. The prisoner, postman, sailor suits take a womanly shape
that got me laughing as I thought of the irony in a medieval painting I saw and
the identity of striped clothing was relegated to those on the margins or
outside the social order — the devil himself is often depicted wearing stripes.
The look is fun, fearless and ever still elegant! Miuccia's message is
crystal-clear. "It's time to be bold."
An old tango record keeps the mood running and the atmosphere in check, rows of
fashion lovers and journalists sit hungry for more as the trends turn
themselves in to the crowd. It’s the “minimal baroque” and the models share the
limelight with cat eye fused with the round eye glasses, the wavy sleek hair and
bold eyebrows and eye shadow. Dresses are fitted, with bold patterns and lots
of stripes (figure B1, B2), often alternating in both colour and thickness. And
then there are the patterns: paired monkeys on a white background give a
careless and playful touch. While the silhouette of the garments is urban the
message is quite still the Caribbean, fun and loose, an attitude backed up by
the fabric: cotton. In keeping with the mood, tropical fruits of marzipan which
were available for viewers after the show.
The sun dresses have a structured look about them. Thin straps and deep V-backs leave
plenty of room for peek-a-boo; while tassels on the hemline beckon (figure
C).The little black dress (figure D) makes an appearance for evening, with
feminine ruffles around the necklines. Lest anyone think, oh well, black dress,
seen that, done that, bought the t-shirt! Prada gave it a distinctive and fresh
remake. Quite the unordinary seeing a range so simple yet so cleverly made on
the ramps these days; if it’s not over the top it’s too simple but Miuccia
managed to balance out the two elements adding a few more to create a perfect
eye candy range that inspires. The models carried fur stoles in contrasting
colours if they could fit them in their hands alongside their huge bright
bags.

After a lot of dissatisfaction from the people towards the fashion industry about the
lack of black models if any at all in the top designer shows (Prada being one
of them who over the years has chosen not to use any black models), I find
myself in awe as I witness two black girls walking! This may not be enough but
it’s definitely a positive start for Prada.
If optimism has been a keyword for trend analysis so far this season, Prada took
it to a whole new level. Bold, Optimistic, Extravagant yet controlled. As the
last girl makes her exit she takes her bow to thunderous applause, wearing
banana earring and reined in it. Splendid show by the Prada house.
