Tortured Boyfriend-Jeans

Referred to as ripped jeans back in the 1950's, this style on demin fabric was associated with murders, poverty and sexual assault, the public looked upon them with fear and tragedy rather than a particular fashion statement or style.

With time they grew fashionable in the rock music crowd from the 1970′s onward, introducing safety pins and patches on them, yet the masses chose not to entertain the style until around the 1980's. Sept 7, 1984: Pre-ripped jeans appeared on the market: “The jeans are fashionably pre-ripped above the right knee and at what would be the panty-line if Calvin still believed in women’s underwear. They also are worn with a denim shirt unbuttoned to the waist and pre-ripped above the left breast pocket” (Terrorist chic invades fashion field). By May 15th, 1986 these ripped jeans were fashionable in Europe: “Some predict the newest trend will be stone-washed jeans with holes worn into pockets, derriere and knees. Dick Gilbert, president of Zena jeans, said he was surprised and more than a little skeptical when his design team told him the ripped jeans were the hottest look in Europe” (Hottest new jeans now include holes) . The holes were extended with time allowing such trends to be referred to as casual, extending them down to college students who wore them on the daily. Parents however could not understand why they were paying so much for torn jeans as even celebrities like Madonna and Meg Ryan took heed to this trend.

These have moved into a new era where they are worn under a trend that now calls them tortured jeans, parents no longer question their expense and the public sees not tragedy to them. It is interesting how trends develop and how we as the public move into these with acceptance.
