FACT OF FASHION #7 WHITE

The social convention of 1884, had children throughout the western world wear white dresses until the age of 6 irrespective of the child's gender. It was said to be a matter of practicality—you dress your baby in white dresses and diapers because white cotton can be bleached and resembles good hygiene for the child. It was only in the mid 19th century that colour was introduced, and even then, the blue/pink concept was actually reversed. An article in trade publication Earnshaw’s Infants’ Department in 1918 recommended, “The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger colour, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.”  It was only in the 1940’s that this was reversed.
