Being from Durban, an area where a good number of independent retailers produce local goods that are unfortunately seldom supported by the market -as the Chinese manufactured items sadly take first option- has got me seeking more and more locally established brands to promote. I personally love shopping from local brands and knowing that my new dress or table or sneaker is not a product of child labour somewhere in unforgiving conditions in a far away country. Local independent stores coincide with customer value -where your opinion as a person truly counts for good, one on one conversations with the producers who understand the product first hand, as well as transparency about the item you are purchasing. What more should a consumer look for?
I am super keen to keep hunting down a few locally manufactured goods and independent retailers for interviews, and hopefully that will contribute towards readers getting to know more about them and supporting the trend of buying locally!
Here are images of a retailer I liked from FOLKLORE, a home and lifestyle store based in Islington, London and well supported by its locals.
