"Make Every Detail Count" is a motto she swears to live by.
The traditional department store continues to see a lot of competition from online stores who do not rely on showcasing their products under a roof or benefiting land lords with monthly rent, but rather a less stressful and more technological cyber environment that needs no hefty budget. Online interior shop owner Manini Rampola is a young entrepreneur with a sharp eye for detail and beautiful things, thankfully through her heart to jump in and start her dream, you do not have to embark on a journey to a distant city to own an exquisite selection of (my personally favoured) Geometric print cushions.
Her online store Detail'24 is heavily influenced by her obsession with Danish designs and her simple love for colour. Manini has collaborated a range of beautiful brands and exclusive furniture pieces to sell online for all those who agree with simple elegance and timeless deco.
• Manini Rampola is...
Life, Love, Laughter Lessons and more lessons, that is how I would describe myself.
• What is it about design that still gets
you?
I discover new objects, furniture pieces etc. daily, it is exciting
and every day is a lesson for me. There is so much rich history behind design
especially furniture design that at times I feel we take for granted. Furniture
design has been redefined and it is up to us to add exciting details to our
everyday spaces.
Design is exciting when it is done with passion and love.
There is so much we can do and offer through it as it's one of many innovative ways to
express to the world what we are feeling. Take an Eames chair for instance, Sir
Charles Eames does not have to explain to us what he was thinking when he and
his wife designed their pieces but we get it. Imagine a piece of furniture
speaking for you in the world through design, which is phenomenal.
• Who/what inspired Detail'24 Online Shop?
The online shop is inspired by my "DREAM" to own a showroom one day.
I wanted to sell things that I love and I would like to see in South African
homes. It was also inspired by my love for design and an obsession with the
Danish designs. It was a more cost effective way for me to live the dream
without worrying about the costs of running a showroom at the moment, but I cannot
wait to translate that into a showroom one day.
•What lifestyle would you say you /
your work fits into?
I would
say I fit into a percentage of people who love and care about their spaces, be
it their work environment, where they choose to eat or their homes.
•How do you keep yourself five steps
ahead on trends? I am
addicted to my laptop, so the internet is the best way to know what is
happening globally. I read a lot of local and international magazines, Danish
blogs are the BEST!!! I follow a lot of amazing pages on social media. I would
not say I am five steps ahead of trends, rather the information I get gives me
a better competitive advantage. I am very careful with the 'trends thing' because
people tend to call themselves trend setters but, only visionaries can do that.
•What do you believe inspires the collection
you source for your online store? My love for colour, graphical and Scandi designs.
I also source brands that resonate with my design story that compliments what I
would like to achieve for Detail'24.
•"Trends are boring, I wouldn't
worry about trends. Just look for beautiful pieces." - Grace Coddington.
What do you think?
Trends are great to give us some form of direction but I think ultimately you
have to follow your heart and design from there. Everyone follows trends, yet it is
the extend in which you do it that counts for the better. Everything in moderation.
•Your own footprint on this planet is?
I would like to be seen as that girl who went out there and did it
regardless of opinions. We live our lives so safe that we do not get to live
our true purpose. I want to be that girl who believed and did it. I also
want to leave a furniture legacy to my kids one day.
•What would you love to see happen in
the design industry in SA? How would you like it to change? SA design is evolving and there is so
much to offer. I would like to see a more bold interpretation to design, more
interior houses using bold and vibrant colours. We have so much that we can do,
I feel we always keep it safe. It is up to us to change the game and give new
meaning to the term 'fun' in design.
•On Cape Town being the world Design
Capital for 2014?
This is the BEST platform for South Africa especially Cape Town. The WC
government really supports the design industry in Cape Town. It is a platform
to showcase who we are and give South Africa a competitive edge around the
world. We have great designers locally who put their lives and souls in what
they create. I feel like it is a design presentation to the world and I hope it
helps grow our exports into other end markets.
•If a career in fashion or Interior
was not an option what else would you do? I left the fashion industry years ago and I have no
desire of going back #smiles. I actually work in a Marketing environment which I enjoy;
I would move more into Brand Management. I blog about Fashion because the
company that I worked for represented that, they were thought leaders in SA
Fashion industry and I miss that excitement about fashion. Overseas bloggers
are turning their blogs into Fashion bibles for the world to consume daily and
top brands are supporting that. I would also be an Economist.
