The frickleness of dress codes

A couple of days ago I found myself in a tolerable boardroom seat engaging in conversations with three fashion buyers from a large retailer. One of the topics we enlarged upon was the character of the term fashion and how too many take it too seriously now more than before, how we as the consumers allow the fickleness of dress codes and purple labels to make us fashion minded rebels who at the end of the day encounter with perverse ramifications. It seems more so that when the pocket is untutored, pride dictates that we should show our best selves even if that means pinching at an already tightened shoe string budget. Inescapably questions came up and one that got me sinking deep in review was something as commonly treated and used; the moniker 'fashion'.

Fashion is fugitive, episodic and brief. A term that is uttered without thought in a world that is serious and full of austerity, bringing a constant appeal to revamp and reinvent in such a tough economic structure. We discussed how slowly but surely the froth is being blown away for some people whilst others...well, without even batting an eyelid will unceasingly inform you that spending R12,000 on a purple label bag is an investment and classic purchase that has endurance in its DNA, probably also hand made by an old man who understands real quality. Really? Okay. Cracked versions of logic if you ask me.

Though we concluded not to find conclusion or cook up a reason if not settle on an understanding, we got each other thinking deeper than usual and left the white walls and chairs mindfully painted with questions and ideas for our next encounter.
